FISHERMAN ALLEGEDLY KILLS COLLEAGUE OVER N3,500

A 37-year-old fisherman, Taiye Agbaje, was yesterday, remanded in prison custody by an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrate’s Court, sitting at Oyingbo, Lagos, for allegedly killing his colleague, Monday Ukoro, 29, over N3,500. Magistrate K. Ariyo, ordered that the defendant be remanded in prison custody, pending legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecution, DPP.
Agbaje was alleged to have killed Ukoro on August 13, at 1p.m., at Ogbun Village in Epe area of Lagos, by hitting him on the head with paddle, during a quarrel that ensued between them over N3,500.
The prosecutor, Inspector Richard Odigie, told the court that the defendant unlawfully killed one Monday Ukoro, aged 29, by hitting him with paddle on the head which led to his death.
According to the prosecutor, the offence committed is punishable under Section 221 of the criminal laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2011.
However, the defendant, who is facing a count charge preferred against him, pleaded not guilty but his plea was not taken.
Odigie, while asking for remand of the applicant, which he said was pursuant to Section 264 of Administration of Criminal Justice of Lagos State, 2011, argued that same was to enable the office of Directorate of Public Prosecution issue a legal advice on the matter; and to enable the police recover the object (paddle), used in the commission of the said crime.
Meanwhile, counsel to the defendant Melda Adebambo, urged the court to discountenance the remand application, and grant the defendant bail.
In her ruling, Magistrate Ariyo upheld the prosecutor’s submission and also ordered the police to duplicate the case file and forward same to DPP for advice, while the matter was adjourned till January 7, 2015.
