More than 6000 Nigerian students are studying in Canadian institutions according to the country's High Commissioner in Nigeria, Ambassador Perry John Calderwood. In a interview with Daily Trust, Calderwood said Nigeria has become 8th contributor of students to his country. "I am very happy to say that we have more than six thousand Nigerian students and Nigeria is now eight largest source of foreign students in our educational institutions," he said.
Calderwood added that the number "is growing up quickly" because of the quality of education available.
"More Nigerians are going to study in Canada for a number of reasons," the High Commissioner said.
"One is that our universities and high colleges are recognized for high standard for education, variety of programmes and the price is competitive compared to some other countries. "
The Ambassador, also said Canada is a place of choice because it is "very open and welcoming".
Calderwood said his country has been enriched by the over 20,000 Nigerian immigrants.
Nigeria's dwindling education fortunes has led many students to education pilgrimage.
