A 60-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly defiling a 13-year old girl in Ogiedi-Elume town in Sapele local government area of Delta State.
The investigating police officer (IPO) of the case, Corporal Paschal, said the suspect (name withheld) allegedly committed the offence on July 20, 2014 and that the matter has been taken to Magistrate’s Court 1 in the area. He said the offence is punishable under Section 218 of the Nigerian constitution.
Information reaching LEADERSHIP Sunday revealed that the 13-year-old girl had always stopped over at the suspect’s house for the act whenever she was sent on an errand. This continued until she could no longer bear the situation and therefore reported the case to her parents which led to the arrest of the man.
Speaking to newsmen in his office, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Sapele area, Sale Rijau, decried the rampant cases of rape of minors in the locality and called for caution.
“I want to specially urge you journalists to carry out an aggressive campaign and sensitisation of the effects and implications of rape by the elderly on minors. There is hardly a day without one report of such case in this police station and it is bad and wicked”, he decried.
