Michelle Rodriguez is the first person to admit that she is a free spirit. So much so, that the 36-year-old actress says she is not sure if she will ever find someone to settle down and start a family with. Speaking to Milla Jovovich in Interview magazine’s February issue, Michelle said:
‘Come on. Look at me! I have absolutely nothing consistent in my life. But that’s where serendipity comes in and I love that.‘One day I’m going to have to sacrifice that to bring life into the world. But the more I can hold off on that, the happier I’ll be. It’s scary for me. I’m a lone wolf. I run by myself on most things.’ She explained: ‘I’ve got lots of really great friends, but the thought of being
in a long-lasting relationship? Psh, I couldn’t last more than six months with somebody, let alone have a father figure around for a kid. I mean, if I could give a kid a father figure, that would be amazing.’ Michelle, who has most recently dated Zac Efron and Cara Delevingne, went on to say the main reason she’d like to have a child – but later added she wouldn’t carry the baby herself.
‘I just want that unconditional love, the kind you get with a family member,’ the 36-year-old said. ‘You might get lucky enough to find that unconditional love in a friend or a lover, but it’s very rare. So if I ever have a kid, it’d be so that I could look in those eyes and know that this child is a piece of me and will love me the same way I love, but I think that’s selfish of me.’ Speaking to Milla, who is currently expecting her second child, Michelle added: ‘I cherish what you do—having kids—but don’t leave that s*** to me. I’ll get a surrogate.’
The Fast And Furious star, who poses in a racy photo shoot for the magazine, made headlines when she and Cara debuted their romance while kissing courtside at a basketball game last year.
A few months later, after splitting from the model, she made it clear she was dating Zac Efron as they smooched on a yacht while on holiday together. But Michelle, who broke up with the actor after two months, says she tries to keep her relationships out of the spotlight.
‘I’ve always been and will always be very private about my personal life,’ she divulged. ‘If anything ever goes public, it is by default, because I happened to be in a place where I was being watched. But for the most part, I honestly don’t care what people think. I never have.’
Michelle, who has also dated Colin Farrell and been linked to Vin Diesel, may have children at some point in her future, but it’s not on her radar right now. The gorgeous brunette said she is far from grown up enough to be ready for a family.
‘I do what I want, when I want, how I want, and because of that, it has taken me so long to grow into an adult human being,’ the star admitted. ‘I wouldn’t want to sacrifice the last years that I have of being youthful in this business to have kids. I’m 36, Milla. It’s been 15 years since I was the lead in my own feature, in Girlfight.
‘So I haven’t done what I came here to do. I’m just kind of fiddling around. I haven’t even been born yet. I’ve been part of really big things that are amazing, but I haven’t taken on that responsibility yet. So I don’t want to sell myself short by having a kid and then regret not doing what I set out to do.’
Michelle has seen plenty of success from the Fast And Furious franchise, and has also had coveted roles in Lost, Avatar and Resident Evil: Retribution (in which she starred opposite Milla).
However the star doesn’t feel she has reached her peak yet, and blames her own attitude for that.
‘I’m a picky little b****,’ she said candidly. ‘I hate everything. I say no to everything. That’s my problem.’
In fact, even her big break with the lead in 2000’s Girlfight was something of a stroke of luck for Michelle, who was reluctant to go to the audition in the first place.
‘I was like, “F*** this s***, what do these people know? They’re not going to know what I’m capable of within 10 minutes of knowing me.” I felt like it was a f***ed-up system. And that’s why I was in a dark place. I didn’t know what I was going to do with my life.
‘I was up to no good with a friend of mine in Jersey City the night before. We were partying and free-styling on a rooftop, and I was, like, “Dude, I know that if I stay here, I’m definitely going to end up in jail.” So I said to myself, “I’m going to go to this damn audition. Let me see, f*** it.” And boom. Here I am. Isn’t that crazy?’
Michelle is best known for her tough girl roles, and thinks she may have something to do with being typecast too.
‘Maybe I exclude myself from that genre by not getting dressed up often enough, by acting ghetto most of the time, and running around in sweats and Timberlands,’ she told Interview.
But she added: ‘I enjoy vanity like the best of them. But I can’t stick to any of that lifestyle for too long because, when its true colours come out, it’s empty and cold and soulless.’
After talking to Milla about doing Peyote and being ‘all into the hallucinogens for a minute’ during the candid interview, Michelle discussed growing up as a Jehovah’s Witness.
‘Sometimes I’d knock on the door of somebody I was going to school with, so it was like living a double life,’ she revealed. ‘At school, I was this tomboy kid who just loved to hang out with her friends and learn curse words, trying to fit in with the cool kids and defending all the kids who got picked on.’
In the steamy photo shoot to accompany the interview, the Machete Kills star poses in just a suit jacket and knickers, smoking a cigarette. Michelle’s next movie is Furious 7, due for release on April 3.
