7 BEAUTY MISTAKES THAT ARE MESSING UP YOUR SELFIES

There's no debating that filters work wonders for your selfies—but there's only so much Mayfair or Nashville can do. Ultimately, the best way to get a great self portrait is to start with a gorgeous look IRL—so we asked Kristin Daniell, a Houston-based makeup artist, which beauty mistakes are most likely to be messing up your selfie game.

Not Properly Priming
Priming your skin for foundation can seem like just another annoying step in your makeup routine, but you're really doing your selfies a disservice if you're skipping it. "You should always use a moisturizer or primer before applying makeup to keep your skin looking smooth and flawless," says Daniell. "It helps the makeup stick better, too." For normal to dry skin, she recommends the Too Faced Hangover Replenishing Face Primer($32, sephora.com) for its dose of glow-giving coconut water. If you're oily, she recommends the NARS Pro-Prime Pore Refining Primer - Oil Free ($34, sephora.com) to keep your skin from looking greasy later in the day.

Lining Your Waterline in Black
This is a surefire way to make your eyes look smaller because it visually closes eyes in, says Daniell. "I prefer colors that are a little softer so that it opens the eyes and makes them pop." She recommends the Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Hustle, Rockstar, Roach, or Mushroom ($20, sephora.com) for eyes that appear bigger and more awake.

Skipping Lip Balm
If you're wearing lipstick in your selfie, Daniell says that you absolutely need to apply a balm pre-color to prep your lips for a smooth application. Your camera will pick up on the cakey, cracked look of matte lipstick on dry, flaky lips—but lip balm will prevent that from happening. Daniell lovesFresh Sugar Lip Treatment ($22.50, sephora.com).
Not Concealing Your Under Eyes
Using coverup under your eyes makes them look more open and awake and instantly gives your face a lift by highlighting the cheekbones. "Everyone should wear concealer under their eyes," says Daniell. She recommends going one shade lighter than your skin tone to brighten without looking unnatural.
Only Putting Mascara On Your Top Lashes
If you want your eyes to pop in your selfie, you need to put mascara on your top lashes and your bottom lashes. This will draw attention to your eyes and make them look more intense. "I love to apply two coats of black mascara to the top lashes and one coat to the bottom lashes," says Daniell. She recommends Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara ($23,sephora.com) for major volume and length.

Using a Black-Brown Mascara
You should use the darkest black mascara available in your favorite formula for the most dramatic lashes possible. These will show up better on camera because of the color saturation. "Make sure you coat your lashes from root to tip," says Daniell. "This is very important so it looks natural and opens the eyes perfectly."

Skipping Blush and Bronzer
To keep your skin from looking washed out on camera, you need to add a boost of healthy glow to your cheeks. "I use blush and bronzer on everyone in order to help them look healthy and glow-y," says Daniell. She says you should look for a bronzer a couple shades darker than your skin tone and recommends trying a pinky-peach blush "so it looks natural and healthy." Her favorites? Too Faced Chocolate Bronzer ($30, sephora.com) andMAC Dainty Mineralize Blush ($27, maccosmetics.com).
