Fela Anikulapo-Kuti created Afrobeat, using that as a political forum to oppose corrupt Nigerian governments and to advocate for the rights of all oppressed people. He used this medium to express his revolutionary political opinions against the dictatorial Nigerian government of the 1970s and 1980s. His influence helped bring a change towards democracy in Nigeria and promoted Pan Africanist politics to the world.
The documentary is directed by Alex Gibney and produced by Jack Gulick & Alex Gibney. The Executive producers were Ruth & Stephen Hendel. The documentary features a myriad of interviews from all over the world by people touched by the genius of the man; His children Femi Kuti, Yeni Kuti & Seun Kuti, his album designer Lemi Ghariokwu, band member Tony Allen, Sandra Izsadore, Bill T. Jones, Paul McCartney, Ahmir ‘Questlove’ Thompson and many others.
It will be screened nationwide in cinemas in Nigeria as from 17th October 2014 but before then a premiere will be held at the New Afrika Shrine on the 12th of October which is the start of the Felabration week (From 12 October – 19 October 2014)
