MICROSOFT TRUECALLER TO HELP DETECT SPAM CALLERS

Microsoft and Truecaller

Swedish startup, Truecaller, has announced a partnership with Microsoft that will see its Live Caller Identity feature arrive for Windows phone users.Founded in 2009, Truecaller is a cross-platform call and contact management service, with more than 85 million users globally, from the infromation we gathered from punch.ng .“It is like an international crowd-sourced telephone directory – which means any mobile phone user who registers with Truecaller can optionally open his or her contacts, including telephone number and name, to the community,” the company’s representative in Nigeria, Mr. Kenneth Onyemaka, said.

Onyemaka said the numbers would then be made available to subsequent registrants, “who can see the name of the caller regardless of whether they are already saved to their own phone address book or not.”

He said, “The community also flags miscreants, including spammers and sales people, and indeed helps one to determine the kind of people you will like or prefer to speak with on your phone. This, in essence, means you can see at a glance whether a call is worth your time or not.”

“Truecaller also comes with a device that enables users to block unwanted calls, serving up access to its ‘Top Spammers’ list. There is also a reverse number lookup option to try to establish who is behind a mystery number on your phone.”

Onyemaka said though Truecaller was already available for Windows Phone, its caller ID functionality was restricted to missed calls, “meaning you could only identify numbers retrospectively – not in real-time as the call was incoming.” He said, “Now, Truecaller for Windows Phone has been brought into line with the Android and iOS incarnations.

“This means you can see if an incoming call is that annoying home insurance company, without having to answer. However, the new feature will only be available for Lumia devices running Windows Phone 8.1 Cyan and above.”

He added that the limitation on Windows Phone had been due to API restrictions from Microsoft’s end, and stated that the computing company had opened things up exclusively to Truecaller to usher Live Caller ID into the fold globally.

“The Live Caller ID feature will be hitting Truecaller for Windows Phone 8.1 Lumia devices today (Wednesday),” he noted.
