A nine-year-old boy has had his arm bitten off by a bear in a zoo after he tried to feed it through the bars of its cage. The incident is understood to have taken place on Saturday at a zoo inside Pingdingshan Hebin Park in Henan Province.
The South China Morning Post reportedthe boy had been visiting the zoo with his grandfather and had wandered off alone. He found the black bear’s enclosure and pushed his right arm through the bars in an attempt to feed it.

The bear reportedly bit down on the boy’s arm and after a struggle, tore it off completely. He was rushed to the local Pingdingshan Number 152 Hospital, where doctors were forced to amputate what was left of his arm.
According to local media, a friend of the family said the boy’s surgery cost more than 20,000 Yuan (£2,000) but that the zoo had only offered 5,000 Yuan (£500) by way of compensation.
The family friend claimed the boy had not been visited by any zoo officials in hospital.
A spokesperson for the zoo said it is actively co-operating with medical staff to assist with the family’s hospital costs, the South China Morning Post reported.
