FATHER FRACTURED BABY DAUGHTER'S SKULL AND RIBS IN VICIOUS ATTACK

A father allegedly assaulted his four-month-old baby daughter, leaving her with a fractured skull and ribs, a court has heard. Martin Thomas, 30, is accused of inflicting injuries on Evie Grace on five separate occasions from 27 November 2012 to February this year. Prosecutor Mark Kellets told a court that Thomas may have struck his young daughter with a blunt instrument and stamped on her ribs.

‘In the absence of any plausible explanation about how she came by these serious fractures [doctors] say the likely causes of these fractures are kicks, stamps and blows, striking Evie’s head with a blunt instrument or against a blunt hard unyielding surface,’ he told Liverpool Crown Court
Thomas, from Wigan, Greater Manchester, said the injuries came about after another child, holding a toy telephone, fell onto Evie while he was changing her nappy on a stool.
Experts, however, said the injures are ‘typical of non-accidental injury.’
Evie, who died from respiratory failure unrelated to her injuries, suffered from colic as well as Treacher Collins syndrome, meaning she had poor bone formation in her face.
Thomas has denied five offences of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and five lesser charges of inflecting grievous bodily harm.
The trial continues.
