Angry Nigerians have continued to condemn the alleged rejection of Nigerian students by Navarro College, Corsicana, Texas, United States. The news of the discrimination was broken on Twitter in a series of tweet by Idris Ayodeji (@idrisayobello). In his tweets, Ayodeji attached screengrabs of rejection letters, evidently sent to prospective students by the college, stating clearly that the only basis for rejection was that Nigeria had Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) cases. "With sincere apologies, I must report that Navarro College is not able to offer you acceptance for the Spring 2015 term.
"Unfortunately, Navarro College is not accepting international students from countries with confirmed Ebola cases," the letter read in part.
Justified Anger?
Nigerian have reacted angrily since the news broke. For many, the fact that Texas is now battling with the EVD, while Nigeria has been certified free of it a recently confirmed by President Goodluck Jonathan, only makes it even more annoying. But this is not the first time Nigerian students will be discriminated against since the EVD scourge began. Perhaps the most acute and boldest of Ebola-related discriminatory acts came from a UK professor, Anthony Glees, who said West African students should be prevented from returning to their studies in British universities. In August, the Liberty University (LU), Lynchburg, Virginia, United States, said it would subject 20 Nigerian students attending the institution to a 21-day screening as they return for the new session. Also, in September, American universities announced that they will subject 9,728 Nigerian students to severe health checks in order to prevent an outbreak in their institutions. Navarro College is a two-year public institution with an annual student enrollment of about nine thousand according to the Wikipedia.
