The boy, who turned 15 that day, claimed he was showing her the pistol when it fired ‘unexpectedly’, the Old Bailey was told.
As he was driven to the police station, he banged his head on the cage and said: ‘Can I say sorry to her mum? It was an accident. Am I going to hell?’
Shereka came to the boy’s home to drop off the gifts on the afternoon of March 22 this year, the jury heard. Just seven minutes later, he rang 999.
By the time paramedics arrived, Shereka had no pulse. She was declared dead less than an hour later.
Both teenagers had images on their phones of the defendant posing with handguns, the court was told.
‘One possibility for you to consider is whether he was posing with the gun in front of her,’ said prosecutor Jonathan Rees. ‘If so, it would not be the first time he has posed in such a fashion.’
The boy first claimed he found the weapon on the marshes but later confessed he was holding it for someone.
Mr Rees proposed he deliberately pulled the trigger, although he admitted there was no evidence of any motive.
The boy denies murder, manslaughter and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life.
He has already admitted two offences relating to possessing the gun and ammunition. The trial continues.
