A 26-year-old woman has been stabbed to death and a six-year-old child injured during an attack at a house.
The woman was rushed to hospital following the attack in Walthamstow, east London.
However, despite the efforts of medics, she died this afternoon , police said.
Detectives said the attack was not random, but that a clear motive had yet to be found.
Met Police officers and London Ambulance Service attended the scene on Monday afternoon and found the victim suffering from stab wounds to her arm and neck.
The child did not require hospital treatment for minor injuries.
Detective Chief Inspector Glen Lloyd said: "We are now investigating the murder of a young woman. While we continue to investigate the motive to this incident we believe that the suspect and the victim were known to each other.
"People living and working nearby may have seen something that could be of vital importance to investigators. I would urge anyone with information to contact officers."
Police have yet to make any arrests in connection with the attack.
