A Chinese man who lost half his skull in a construction accident has undergone groundbreaking surgery with the help of a 3D printer.
The man, known only as Hu, suffered the injury when he was knocked down three flights of stairs after being hit by a pile of wood.

Despite surviving the incident, the 46-year-old farmer is now unable to speak or write and also experiences double vision.
During the procedure, surgeons at Xijing Hospital in northwest China inserted a custom-sized 3D-printed titanium mesh into where the missing part of his head used to be.
Professor Shu Mao Guo, the lead surgeon involved in the operation, has published numerous papers researching progressions in regenerative medicine and tissue engineering.
He is hopeful that following the procedure, Hu's brain tissue will begin to regenerate eventually leading to him regaining the ability to speak and write.
Hu is now under observation in the hospital's Intensive care unit and doctors hope to release him in the coming days.
