A Nigerian national who jumped from the window of a third floor flat at Pimpale Gurav on Saturday evening died from serious injuries sustained a few hours later. The man, Obyeka Anwanbukwa (35), was allegedly trying to escape arrest after a team of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) from Mumbai turned up at the flat…
The NCB team, which had learnt that Obyeka had temporarily shifted to Pune from Mumbai, came to the flat in Bhaunagar along with the Sangvi police around 7.45pm.
“Obyeka, who lived at Khargar in Mumbai, was staying in his friend’s flat at Pimpale Gurav for the last two days with a woman of Indian origin,” senior inspector Saifan Mujawar of the Sangvi police station said. “When the NCB team tried to take him into custody, he jumped from the window and fell on a grassy patch. He got up and tried to run away but the police managed to nab him.”
Mujawar said Obyeka was taken to the Aundh hospital. “After a health check-up, he was handed over to the NCB team, which was to take him back to Mumbai. However, while the team was having dinner before leaving, Obyeka complained of uneasiness. He was again taken to the Aundh hospital where he was declared dead at around 11.30pm,” he said.
On Sunday, the police took Obyeka’s body to the Sassoon hospital for a post-mortem. “However, the post-mortem will be done only on Monday morning. We will be able to ascertain the cause of death once we get the post-mortem and autopsy reports from the hospital,” Mujawar said.
The police have registered a case of accidental death. They have also initiated an inquiry against the person who had rented out the flat.
