This kit includes a 1-2 month supply of all 3 Regimen products (Gentle Cleanser, Treatment, and Moisturizer) plus a full-size Glycolic Acid and Jojoba Oil.
For specific instructions on how to use this kit, learn The Regimen.
Acne.org Gentle Cleanser
Generously sized ultra-gentle liquid cleanser in a pH balanced formula which doesn't overdry. Unscented and dye-free, lathers well, and rinses clean. Contains 120 pumps.
Does it take off makeup?
Yes, it works at removing foundation, powder and blush. Acne.org Moisturizer also removes makeup very well. Jojoba oil may be superior for removing mascara and eye makeup.
How do I use it to shave?
We recommend that men use Acne.org Cleanser to shave. If you are a man who plans to use Acne.org Gentle Cleanser to shave, we recommend the Men’s Kit which comes with a double-sized 16oz. Gentle Cleanser. You can use Acne.org Cleanser to shave just as you would a shaving cream. Dispense into your palm--3 pumps is good--and get a nice thick lather going. Apply as shave cream and off you go. It's as good or better than almost all shaving creams, gels, or soaps and helps you avoid potentially irritating ingredients in these products. See the guide to shaving for more detailed instructions.
Acne.org Treatment (Benzoyl Peroxide – 2.5%)
Generously sized 2.5% benzoyl peroxide acne treatment. Gel-based, so it goes on clear and spreads easily. Pharmaceutical grade, pH balanced, fragrance-free, and dye-free. Won't "clump up" with moisturizers, and won't turn white when you perspire. Created especially for The Regimen. Studies show that 2.5% benzoyl peroxide works as well as 10% solutions, without the excessive dryness and irritation.
Why make another 2.5% benzoyl peroxide?
From Dan (Acne.org Founder): "For The Regimen to work well, you need to use a generous amount of 2.5% benzoyl peroxide. As it stood, out of all the products available over-the-counter in the U.S., Neutrogena On-the-Spot Acne Treatment was the only widely available 2.5% benzoyl peroxide, and it comes in a .75 ounce tube which runs out quickly. For years I lobbied large brand names in the acne medication industry, asking them to make a generously sized 2.5% benzoyl peroxide gel. After writing and calling many times and receiving friendly responses but no action, I decided it was necessary for me to make a larger one for us myself."
How does benzoyl peroxide work?
First it is important to understand how skin blemishes occur. Whether we are talking about facial acne, back acne or other body acne, acne problems start the same way. For reasons no one understands, a pore collapses in on itself and the walls of the follicle stick together, preventing sebum (oil) from escaping.
Inside sebum lives acne bacteria (P. Acnes). Normally, the oil in the follicle drains to the surface, taking acne bacteria with it. However, when the pore is blocked, the bacteria begins to multiply. Inflammation ensues and a zit is born. If the pore is blocked completely a whitehead results. If the pore is partially blocked, a blackhead persists.
Acne medicine usually attacks one of the two phases of a blemish's life cycle, either preventing the initial collapse of the pore, or killing P. Acnes bacteria. Benzoyl peroxide treats the latter, and perhaps both phases. Out of any treatment on the market, prescription or over-the-counter, benzoyl peroxide kills bacteria the best. Studies show benzoyl peroxide kills over 99% of acne bacteria in quick fashion. Upon application of benzoyl peroxide to the skin, oxygen is created. Benzoyl peroxide is the only known substance which can bring this oxygen down into the skin where it kills the bacteria. This is why benzoyl peroxide is so effective.
So the question remains, what about the pore plugging up in the first place? Benzoyl peroxide also has a mild drying and peeling effect which is thought to help prevent this occurence and tends to transform red or ruddy, irritated looking skin into balanced, calm, healthy looking skin. In a nutshell, if you use enough 2.5% benzoyl peroxide, it's quite frankly stronger than acne.
Why 2.5% strength?
Several studies show that 2.5% benzoyl peroxide helps get rid of blemishes and helps prevent pimples just as well as 10% solutions. Because of the lower concentration of benzoyl peroxide, 2.5% gets rid of acne with much less irritation, thus allowing for a sustainable regimen which keeps the skin healthy and clear.
Do not be fooled by "maximum strength" claims on 10% benzoyl peroxide medications. Companies know that people will always buy the "maximum strength" they can buy. But educated consumers know that 2.5% benzoyl peroxide is equally effective and much less irritating. This allows you to use as much as you need to get completely clear and stay that way.
How to use 2.5% benzoyl peroxide?
The majority of acne-prone people must use a generous amount of 2.5% benzoyl peroxide to achieve clear skin. This is why Acne.org Treatment is made in large sizes. It is important to remember, as with any acne treatment, that you are gentle in application with Acne.org Treatment. Irritation can aggravate acne, so be gentle when you apply it.
Before you use Acne.org Treatment, be sure to read through The Regimen carefully, print it out or bring the video into the bathroom with you while you perform The Regimen. You should start clearing up quickly and reliably if you follow The Regimen closely.
What is pharmaceutical grade?
From Dan (Acne.org Founder): "Acne.org Treatment is a pharmaceutical grade product. It is triple milled to ensure extra fine raw material. This is why you won't find grittiness in Acne.org Treatment like you often do in other benzoyl peroxide products. When applied to the skin, this produces micronized particles of benzoyl peroxide which penetrate more deeply and completely into the skin.
I've witnessed that the vast majority of people clear up more quickly and completely with a pharmaceutical grade benzoyl peroxide, and you should be able to switch over from whichever benzoyl peroxide you're currently using to a pharmaceutical grade product like Acne.org Treatment with complete confidence. However, a few people have reported that they have broken out upon switching to Acne.org Treatment. Although this is uncommon, there is an explanation for those of you who may experience an initial breakout, and I'd like to allay your fears here. It could be the result of the smaller particles of benzoyl peroxide reaching deeper down into the skin and activating the microcomedones which are well below the surface in some way. This acne was destined to reach the surface at some point but it is in effect cleaned out. The good news is that after this initial breakout that some people may experience, you can expect your skin to stay clearer with a pharmaceutical grade benzoyl peroxide medication. With each application it will be penetrating more deeply and preventing acne from forming."
Why is it so inexpensive?
From Dan (Acne.org Founder): "I am able to offer Acne.org Treatment at a low price and still make a profit due to my low overhead. Also, because you are ordering directly from me, there are no complex distribution channels or middlemen that inflate prices. Lastly, I do not advertise and have no marketing department."
What are the benefits?
- Generously sized, so you can use as much as you need to get completely clear.
- Gel-based so it spreads more easily than a cream and goes on clear.
- Does not contain grittiness like many cream based benzoyl peroxide products can.
- Will not turn white when you exercise and perspire.
- Easily applied to the back and chest.
- Works well with moisturizer, and does not "clump up."
- Pharmaceutical grade and is triple milled so it penetrates more deeply and completely into the skin than many over-the-counter benzoyl peroxide products.
What are the risks and warnings?
As with any benzoyl peroxide product, it is important that you start slowly with the amount that you use. Benzoyl peroxide comes with what dermatologists refer to as the well known "hardening effect." This means that benzoyl peroxide causes redness, dryness, and itchiness in some people for the first couple of weeks until the skin gets used to it. While this may be unavoidable to some extent, you can prevent some of the redness and dryness by being prudent and STARTING SLOWLY. See this link on Acne.org for how much to use. Also, a very small percentage of the population is allergic to benzoyl peroxide, which is evidenced by swelling and/or severe crusting. If you suspect you may be allergic, test it on a small area (the meaty part of the inner forearm is a good spot) for a few days before diving in. Lastly, benzoyl peroxide can bleach dyed fabrics, so keep it away from clothing that you love. Benzoyl peroxide may also bleach hair and eyebrows in some people to some extent.
Acne.org Moisturizer with Licochalcone
Generously sized moisturizer with licochalcone. Intensely hydrating, non-comedogenic lotion designed to eliminate dry, flaky skin. Goes on clear and absorbs quickly, leaving no residue. Super light feel, fragrance-free and dye-free.
What is licochalcone?
Licochalcone gives this moisturizer its characteristic yellow color. Licochalcone is a highly distilled and potent extract of a species of licorice root well known for powerfully calming and soothing the skin. It is especially beneficial on acne-prone skin which tends to be sensitive and irritated. Licochalcone is incredibly expensive at $6000 per kilogram and needs to be used at .1% strength to be effective. This moisturizer contains the full .1% and is not included simply for "label claim." If you suspect you may be allergic to licorice root, patch test your skin by applying some Moisturizer to your inner elbow for 2 days before applying to the face.
Note: To avoid staining light colored clothing, allow moisturizer to dry for a minute or so before dressing.
Is the Moisturizer non-comedogenic (non pore-clogging)?
Yes. 100%. You do not have to worry about this moisturizer clogging your pores. Each ingredient is chosen carefully to ensure that this moisturizer is completely non-comedogenic. Far from causing any problems with acne, regular use should actually help calm and soothe acne-prone skin. Use it liberally without fear.
Why 2 full pumps?
Many people are accustomed to using only a small amount of moisturizer. However, when you are on The Regimen and using generous amounts of 2.5% benzoyl peroxide, your skin will require extra hydration. It is important to use 2 full pumps (4mL) of this moisturizer to keep your skin in balance. During the first few weeks of The Regimen you may require 3 pumps.
Why add jojoba oil?
Jojoba oil makes any regular moisturizer into a super moisturizer. If you want extra hydration, try mixing in a few drops (5-6) of jojoba oil to your moisturizer before you apply it. The added jojoba oil will provide an extra boost of moisture without clogging pores. It may also help control oil production—an extra, very welcome benefit.
Acne.org AHA+ (Glycolic Acid - 10%)
Fragrance-free and dye-free. Approximate pH 4.0 - 4.1.
For the face: From Dan: "I have always kept some glycolic acid (a.k.a. alpha hydroxy acid – AHA) around as a secret weapon. This is how I describe what it does: The Regimen will get you completely clear. Adding in glycolic acid will take clear to perfect.”
When to start with Glycolic Acid: Perform The Regimen for a month before starting with Acne.org AHA+. Wait until your skin becomes accustomed to benzoyl peroxide. If you use it sooner than this it may sting badly. When you are ready to use it, you can either replace your nightly moisturizer with AHA+ 2-3 times a week or dispense 1/2 AHA+ and 1/2 Moisturizer into your palm, mix, and apply every evening. You should notice your skin looking better and more even-toned and will undoubtedly get some compliments.
For the body: Acne.org AHA+ works alongside benzoyl peroxide to completely clear body acne. See The Body Regimen for instructions.
As a spot treatment: If you see a zit forming, apply 2.5% benzoyl peroxide and allow it to dry, then apply AHA+. Many people find that this prevents the zit from maturing. Keep in mind that the way this works best is if you catch it very early.
To combat irritation: When anything rubs against the skin repeatedly, such as a chin strap or helmet, it irritates the skin and can cause a breakout. Attempt to avoid or reduce irritation when possible. However, if you do end up irritating your skin, try applying AHA+ after your next Regimen application. This can help prevent an irritation-induced acne flare up.
What is licochalcone?
Licochalcone gives this product its characteristic yellow color. It is a highly distilled and potent extract of a species of licorice root well known for powerfully calming the skin. It is especially beneficial on acne-prone skin which tends to be sensitive and irritated. Licochalcone is included in AHA+ at the ideal efficacious amount (.1%) and not simply for "label claim." If you suspect you may be allergic to licorice root, patch test your skin by applying some AHA+ to your inner elbow for 2 days before applying to the face.
Note: To avoid staining light colored clothing, allow AHA+ to absorb for 30 seconds or so before dressing.
SUNBURN ALERT: Any alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) may increase your skin's sensitivity to the sun and particularly the possibility of sunburn. Use a sunscreen and limit sun exposure while using AHA and for a week after discontinuing its use.
Please see the Acne.org AHA+ FAQs for answers to frequently asked questions.
Other ways to use it:
Extra-light lip balm: Put 2 drops or so on you finger and then apply it to your lips. Quite nice, especially before bed.
Makeup remover: Removes all types of makeup easily.
Massage oil: Jojoba oil is known as one of the world's best massage oils.
Baby care: Jojoba oil is very gentle and inert and can be used on both adult and baby.
Note: Jojoba oil may get cloudy or develop floating wax particulates, especially in cool weather. This is normal and to be expected. However, if you see mold form, that means you're storing your jojoba oil in too wet and warm of an area.
Store in a cool, dry place. Do not store in the shower! This will keep your jojoba oil pristine for years if need be.
Our jojoba oil dispenses one drop at a time.
