A 60-year-old man has been arrested by the Edo State Police Command for allegedly defiling a nine-year-old girl at Ugbor quarters in Benin.
The suspect, identified as Friday Akpan, was among 46 suspects paraded on Tuesday by the state Commissioner of Police, Foluso Adebanjo, for various criminal offences.
The suspect was said to have lured his victim into his apartment, where he had unlawful carnal knowledge of her.
It was also learnt that the victim was the daughter of his employer.
The father of three and a gardener, who hails from Akwa Ibom State, claimed that he was tempted by the devil.
“I don’t know what came over me. The devil pushed me to do that.
“I sent her to buy something for me and when she came I only held her.
“But when her parents saw her running out of my premises, they said that I defiled her,” he said.
The police commissioner, however, told SOURCEthat Okoye had confessed to the crime and would be charged to court as soon as investigations were concluded.
The command paraded eight other suspects for defilement and three others for alleged rape.
Adebanjo also paraded 11 suspected armed robbers, seven suspected kidnappers and 14 persons for illegal possession of firearm.
Items recovered from the suspects include 20 assorted guns, 192 live cartridges, 12 cutlasses and nine vehicles.
“The command remains grateful to the good people of the state for their co-operation in making Edo State relatively peaceful.
“Criminals are once again warned to desist from any form of criminal activities or relocate from Edo State because the command will continue to clamp down on them,” he said.
