MAN REMANDS IN PRISON FOR KILLING HIS GIRLFRIEND

A Lagos State Chief Magistrates Court sitting in Ebute Metta area of the state yesterday remanded a 28- year-old driver, Raphael Effiong at the Ikoyi prison for allegedly killing his girlfriend.

Effiong, was accused by the police of murdering his girlfriend, 29-year-old Miss Gift Sunday, for turning down his marriage proposal in an hotel in Ketu.
The accused person is facing a one- count charge of murder, an offence which the police maintained contravened Section 221 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The court presided over by Magistrate, F.J Adefine refused to take his plea but ordered that the accused person be remanded in prisons’ custody, pending an advice from the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
Earlier, the prosecutor, Corporal Onaiwu Iyobosa, had informed the court that the crime was committed on July 28 at 11.30 p.m., at Mayor Lodge hotel of No.10,Yusuf Oyero St., Ketu, Lagos.
Iyobosa also told the court that the accused and the deceased met last year, and that the duo had been having an affair since then.
“The accused proposed to the deceased many times but she refused the proposal because the accused is a difficult person to deal with.
“On the fateful day, the accused invited the deceased to a hotel, the deceased even cooked food to the hotel.
“They checked in, and a misunderstanding ensued after the deceased turned down the marriage proposal made to her by the accused. He (Effiong) brought out scissor and stabbed the deceased on her armpit and breast.
“The deceased screamed for help.The guests at the hotel heard her voice and they forcefully opened the door because the accused refused to open the door,” Iyobosa told the court.
