One of the suspects arrested in connection with the rape and murder of a third year student of Moi University, Kenya, Charity Maina, is her former lover. source gathered from Kenyan news media reports that the boyfriend was arrested on Monday alongside another suspects and is being questioned by the Eldoret police. Kenyan Live Feed reports that the suspect had before Charity's death threatened to “teach her a life lesson because they were not in good terms." Charity was also reported to be seeing another man and it is now being suspected that her death may have been a crime of passion committed in revenge.
There is yet no official confirmation of the boyfriend's arrest or the charges against him.
Charity, a student of the institution’s School of Arts and Social Sciences, was found raped and strangled with her clothes torn off her body near the school's main campus gate.
Students of the institution had protested violently, alleging that the Police have failed to give them the needed protection despite several cases of insecurity.
“We have been asking the police to provide adequate security for us but nothing has been done. We have had many incidents of insecurity yet police do not act,” a student leader, Rolex Riziki, was quoted as saying.
Following the protests in which a police van was burnt, the institution’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Richard Mibei, had called on the students to allow police to investigate the matter so that the culprits can be brought to book.
