AXE MEN: CULTISTS THREATEN TO KILL FEMALE LECTURER IN YABATECH

Two suspected cultists, who are students of Yaba College of Technology, have been nabbed for threatening to kill their lecturer, Mrs Abraham Ibe. The pair, 24-year-old Tayo Ogunyomi and 28-year-old Kehinde Olaoye, appeared before a Chief Magistrates’ Court, sitting in Yaba, Lagos on Tuesday, 28 October. The offences were committed on 16 October at 9 pm on the school campus.

All hell was let loose on Monday when LASTMA officials allegedly beat up, and then pushed a conductor to death, at Cele bus stop along the Apapa-Oshodi expressway, Lagos State.In retribution, several vehicles parked at the office of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, were smashed by an angry mob. The saga began after LASTMA officials on patrol arrested the driver of a commuter bus and allegedly demanded for a bribe but the driver and conductor refused to part with any money.

A family of viruses that Ebola belongs to may have existed over 20 million years ago, according to a new study published in the journal PeerJ. Researchers from the University of Buffalo found that Filoviruses did not begin appearing 10,000 years ago as previously thought, but in fact have been around for much longer. The Ebola virus belongs to the family of filoviruses, also known as the Filoviridae family. “Filoviruses are far more ancient than previously thought,” said Derek Taylor, lead author of the study and a professor of biological sciences at the University of Buffalo, in the press release. “These things have been interacting with mammals for a long time, several million years.”

The naira weakened by 0.15 per cent against the dollar on the interbank market on Monday, on a renewed surge in dollar demand despite about $112m in sales by an oil company. A unit of French oil major Total sold about $112m to some lenders on Monday, but was insufficient to support the naira, according to Bloomberg. The naira fell to 165 to the dollar compared with 164.74 it closed at on Friday, due to increased dollar demand from importers and corporations stocking up for year-end sales. The naira had recovered from a 7-month low last week, as the central bank took steps to prop it up.

Having served in the Nigeria Police Force for about 30 years, the plan of ASP Emmanuel Mbilla was to retire in 2018 after which he would set up his own private security firm. However, Emmanuel’s dream was cut short on February 22, 2014 after a life-changing encounter with a naval rating, Warrant officer Unaji Enejor, in the Kirikiri area of Lagos State. According to punch.ng reports that the 50-year-old victim was attacked in the eye by the naval rating, causing him to lose his sight completely.

The girl, according to a report by Human Rights Watch, was abducted in 2013 but she escaped after four weeks in captivity.
