An 18-year-old houseboy named Hounvenou Yavine, a national of Republic of Benin, has been arrested by the police for killing the mother of his boss, one Mrs. Mariam Abiola.
Yavine was said to have slit the 78-year-old woman’s throat at Ijaiye Low Cost Housing Estate, Pen Cinema, Lagos.
Accordig to Punch report, Yavine was brought to Lagos in April 2014, by his elder sister, whose husband took him to the Abiola’s house to work. The sister’s husband was also collecting his monthly salary of N8, 000.
Yavine job was to do the chores in the house and follow his boss to her shop where he assisted in selling alcoholic drinks.
His boss’ mother came to live with them in May after her residence in Ikeja was demolished. He was then given anew assignment of tending to the old woman instead of going to the shop.
On the day of the incident, Mariam was home alone with the suspect when he stabbed her with a knife on her throat and killed her.
Upon interrogation, he claimed someone had asked him to kill the woman.
He was arraigned before an Ebute Meta Magistrate’s Court on one count of murder.
According to the police prosecutor, Inspector Asup Feddy, the suspect confessed to the crime and the knife he used in committing the act was taken as an exhibit.
Presiding over the case, the Magistrate, E.O. Ogunkanmi ordered the accused to be remanded in Prison custody, pending legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions and adjourned till September 8, 2014 for legal advice.
